Doesn’t moving through a happy day sound wonderful?

A little twist in thinking makes all the difference. You don’t have to do anything or spend any time on it. All you need to do is shift your focus. Here’s the simple action to take – start wishing for the people around you to be happy. And, let go of wishing for yourself to be happy. It’s guaranteed to make you feel good.

I gravitated to one place over and over in Kolkata. It was the Missionaries of Charity where Mother Teresa lived, dreamed, loved, and made things happen.

This one thing in the very humble museum there touches my heart every time I see it. It’s the Map of Souls she drew out to plot where she was going to spread peace and happiness. It reached all the way to Chicago!

It makes me wonder.

What type of person does that?

I find a wise and courageous person knows that your own happiness is dependent on the happiness of others. They’re a reflection of you. This is a profound shift in thinking.

I’d like to say I’m a wise person like that – and the truth is I’m still a work-in-progress. And, I’m thankful for leaders like this that inspire me to do better. If that sounds good to you to, you’ll find some tips below to making that happy day happen more regularly.

3 Easy Ways to have a Happy Day

If you’re not careful, in under a minute, you may set a completely different course for your day. You could do these 3 things in the shower, on the train, walking into the office. Anywhere. The earlier, the better.

1. Wish for others to be happy

It was my common practice to wake up in the morning and think. “How am I going to get what I need done”. Because I thought if I get those things done, I’ll be happy. Interestingly, that doesn’t work at all.

The easiest way to set up a happier day is to wake up and genuinely wish to influence the happiness of others around you. Imagine gently saying to yourself instead “How incredible it will be to spread good energy into the day of anyone I meet”.

2. Make your own People Map

Try something simple. Imagine who’s on your People Map today. Who will you encounter as you move through your day? How would they look and sound if they were feeling completely happy?

Take a moment now. It’s like creating a snapshot of the best outcome for your day.  For example, you may see your team feeling relaxed and chatting with each other. Or, it could be the person who takes your lunch order smiling and telling you her name and a little about herself. Have fun with this!

3. Let love flow into your heart

Absorb what you see. Let yourself feel the happiness that seeps into your heart. Notice that calm sensation and let it run through your body. Perhaps your shoulders come down, you breathe deeper, and allow yourself to relax. Enjoy that.

And, of course, if there’s a spare minute out there to plant more seeds for happiness, please repeat this over and over.

In Summary

By radically shifting your thinking and attention, you’ll have a happier day. Wish once, twice, continuously throughout the day for the happiness of others. The more you do it the better the result! And you can do an easy test. Keep wishing yourself to be happy and notice what happens. Build your own conviction.

Please share in the comments who would be in your People Map today. It’ll make you feel good to share (and them too). I promise.

With lots of love.
